Roku, the simple little streaming device, has officially hit the 5 millionth unit milestone. The company released a statement yesterday patting themselves on the back for this accomplishment. And, that is definitely back pat worthy!
The first Roku came out only 5 years ago in 2008. The first digital set-top box was made just to stream Netflix on your TV. This came before streaming was widely available on smart TVs, video game consoles and DVD players.
The press release even had an infographic showing where Roku started, how they evolved and a wide-eyed idea of where they are planning on going.
Just a little before the 5 millionth player announcement was made, there was also an announcement about Time Warner Cable app being made available on Roku boxes. This app is available to existing standard Time Warner Cable customers to access over 300 channels through their Roku.
This is the first TV connected device that Time Warner Cable has agreed to stream their content on.
